Not only is it released, it’s renamed…
Mozilla Firebird has become Mozilla Firefox. Due to copyright issues with the previous code name (an open-source database), the project leaders thought that it would be best to switch. Along with the just-released version 0.8 comes this name change as well as new icons. You can even find propaganda buttons to use.
Ben Goodger talks more about the switch on his weblog.
Firebir… um, fox, really is the best browser around. Almost all kinks that were in the early versions are ironed out and it now performs just as well as IE in every way, and better in most. (Every way, that is, except in those involving (a) bad coding practice, or (b) Microsoft. Windows Update et al don’t work.) Firefox features tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, an integrated download manager, and a themable interface. Plus, it’s faster than IE. What more could you ask for?

Here’s the question - can you install Firefox over an existing installation of Firebird and keep all your previous settings, or do those have to be redone? I have the last release version of Firebird, and I’m loathe to upgrade just yet until I find out those key things…
You betcha. All settings, including bookmarks and themes, are saved in your profile directory, not the application directory. The only thing you’ll have to reinstall are the extensions… even though the directory changes.
In fact, you can even have multiple installations of Fire*. Just set them to run off different profiles, and you can put them whereever you want :p
