Quote of the Moment

Seth: Stop! My head explode.
Matt: And then I get to write the word "FATALITY" on the wall, in traditional Mortal Kombat fashion...

Barbie and Ken no more

Barbie and Ken are “splitting up.” That’s kinda sad. Not as if I played with them or anything, but they’ve been together for like, 43 years now. That’s a long time to date someone and never get married. And Barbie already has a new beau… makes ya wonder if she’s been, erm, keeping him in the wings…

Valentine’s Day Fun

I love being sneaky for Valentine’s Day. Getting people things and not telling them who sent them. After all, secret admirers ARE the best admirers. And a little bit of thought goes a long way.

Not only is it released, it’s renamed…

Mozilla Firebird has become Mozilla Firefox. Due to copyright issues with the previous code name (an open-source database), the project leaders thought that it would be best to switch. Along with the just-released version 0.8 comes this name change as well as new icons. You can even find propaganda buttons to use.

Ben Goodger talks more about the switch on his weblog.

Firebir… um, fox, really is the best browser around. Almost all kinks that were in the early versions are ironed out and it now performs just as well as IE in every way, and better in most. (Every way, that is, except in those involving (a) bad coding practice, or (b) Microsoft. Windows Update et al don’t work.) Firefox features tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, an integrated download manager, and a themable interface. Plus, it’s faster than IE. What more could you ask for?

Ugh so sick

I started getting sick last night, until I woke up about 4:00 this morning feeling as bad as I’ve felt for a looong time. Although I did get in almost fifteen hours of sleep today, heh. I’m starting to feel a wee bit better, having been drugged up.

We’re going back to OU tomorrow to check out the dorms and a few other little things. I basically have to decide whether I should stay in the Honors housing (community bathrooms, newer facilities) or Towers housing (quads, larger rooms). I hope I get a normal roommate, lol. Peter Graf, my roommate at Missouri Scholars Academy, liked country music to help him sleep. And he liked it LOUD. Three weeks of it was tolerable… but a whole year? Hopefully they have you fill out a nice questionnaire regarding likes and dislikes to match you with a roommate better.

/me goes back to get more Sprite.

National Merit!

I just got word that I was selected as a National Merit Finalist. Phew. That puts a big load off my chest. This award is my ticket to scholarship at The University of Oklahoma, where I plan to attend. Scholarship as in $65,000 scholarship. In case you don’t know about the National Merit Competition:

  • Students in each state take the PSAT (Preliminary SAT) their junior year.
  • Approximately the top 1,000 from each state are selected as Commended Students. This means a score of approximately 210 - 218, based on the state you live in. The highest possible score on the PSAT is 240. (My score was 238.)
  • The 55,000 Commended Students are pared down to 16,000 Semi-Finalists based on GPA and PSAT score.
  • 15,000 Finalists are selected based on an essay, community service requirements, and extracurricular activities.

I’ve already picked OU as my first-choice school, so it’s ever so likely that that’s where I’ll be heading this fall. Getting paid to go to college isn’t a bad thing… and if I can just get a couple more scholarships I applied for, like the Most Valuable Student scholarship from The Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks or the Helping Hands Book Scholarship, I’ll really be sitting pretty.
