WordPress vs. Movable Type

Having spent most of this afternoon playing with WordPress 1.2, I feel fairly comfortable with its features… some of which are pretty nifty. It has both pros and cons compared to Movable Type 2.661. Following is a breakdown of the different areas of each software package. 100 points possible.

Bye bye Movable Type

I’m about 70% done rewriting my blog templates to work with WordPress, since Movable Type went paid for version 3. Yes, I know there’s a free version… but I didn’t like MT very much (mostly because of chugging) and just needed an excuse to switch ;). You probably won’t even notice when the switch happens.

AP Tests so far

Well, so far so good. I’ve taken four of my six AP tests. But wait, I hear you say. Shouldn’t you have taken five by this point? Well, yes, actually. Here’s what happened.

Monday… first AP. French. I didn’t take French this year (because I can take either French or government, but not both) but I still wanted to take the AP because I figured I could at least get a 3. So I went with Jeff to the mall for an hour or so to talk some French and get warmed up. Got back about 11:30, and Dad met me at the door. He was like “Well, you’re not taking the French AP today, sorry.” It turned out that the French teacher didn’t order me one, and the office somehow forgot that I told them I wanted one. It’s all kinda fuzzy. Oh well, I get to take the makeup on the 19th.

Tuesday was Computer Science in the morning, and Stats in the afternoon, both of which were pretty easy. I would talk about them, but that might lead to the AP people coming after me and bludgeoning me in my bed. English Literature was Thursday, and Biology was today. Biology was the hardest one so far.

IdioPoll

I started work tonight on IdioPoll, a standalone polling script, after Stephen (one of the people I host) had me help him with this TERRIBLE polling script that looks like it was written in about three minutes. Seriously, that thing was awful. It was from scriptme.com, so note to self: never use scriptme’s stuff.

I’m about 40% complete on the basic script. Features:

  • Multiple Polls
  • Switch between active polls with a few clicks… and you don’t have to change any code on the page where the poll appears
  • Random poll: set multiple polls active and the script will randomly choose one to show
  • Completely customizable poll styles (and no CSS editing involved)
  • Allow single-vote (radio) or multi-vote (checkbox)
  • Display results as <div> blocks, simple images, or compound images (static left and right pieces).
  • Polls expire after x days / hours
  • Double-vote protection

Sure, there are probably excellent poll scripts out there already, but this is good practice for me.

UPDATE: Go get it.
