Fear

I had rounds tonight. Got threatened and verbally abused by a resident. Felt uncomfortable enough to have the police do the remainder of rounds with us, because the guy was crazy.

Fear.

Week o’ Doom (and Cheese)

This was an intense week. I had tests Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and an uber-quiz Thursday. That in itself meant that I was out of commission most of the week… sleep debt, studying a lot, and lots of caffeine combined to make me a buzzin' zombie. Braaaaains…

…but there was also drama. I found I was running low on laundry on Wednesday (no, that is not the drama) and so rummaged around in my closet and found a pair of jeans in the back that were clean. I wondered why I had put them so far behind everything else, since they were perfectly good jeans. I then went to my first two classes happily. After those classes, I went to get lunch, put my hand in my back pocket to get my ID card…

Design can be fun

Over the past month, I've been working to design the new skin for ZetaBoards. It's been one of the best designing experiences I've ever had, for one reason: I have a wonderful designer with whom I'm working. I'm a rather competent coder, but I have little design skill, as far as picking good colors, making sure that elements are logical, and creating graphical components. Nicola changes all that. I can slap up the HTML in 30 minutes flat, and then she adds the styles and graphics that make the difference between a hideous skin and an amazing skin. When I don't have to worry about what my code looks like, I can spend extra time making sure I pull out all the stops in adding as many HTML hooks for skinners as I can possibly cook up. A standards-compliant skin not only looks great in all the browsers, but it ensures that search engines rank sites higher. I predict quite amazing leaps for many sites after the upgrade.

One of my favorite parts of the new skin is its semantic correctness. The emoticon list? It's a list, not a table. The custom profile fields? They're not <span>'d and <div>'d to all ends; they are simple yet elegant definition lists. Table headers aren't just <td>'s with classes applied to them; <th>'s are used where they were intended.

Trashy

I walked onto my hall tonight and found the study lounge pretty much trashed. Nasty wrappers strewn all over, empty boxes, a hair tie, a lighter, some used napkins, Doritos bags, all sorts of things. There was also a mostly-full carton of individually-wrapped ramen packets. It just became mine. Finally, a rather-nice pair of shoes… what in the world are shoes doing in with the trash?

I took them too and put them in the trash bag. If someone wants them back, they'll have to take the trash AND the shoes… and a citation for littering

The Little Things

As you might recall, I had a program for my floor last month that involved food and lots of Super Smash Bros. Melée. Although attendance was low, the people there seemed to enjoy it.

Tonight I saw Gavin as he was keying onto the floor. He mentioned, "hey, we should have another one of those tournament things, it was fun." Made my day.

It's the little things.
